3.5mm Jack breakout SKU: 333088 silkscreen labels inverted on v1.0.0 and v1.1.0

Customer:

We’ve been using several 3.5mm Jack breakout boards SKU: 333088 with standard audio headphones and discovered a problem: the TIP is shorted to ground, while the left and right channels are on Ring 1 and Ring 2 connections.

The boards appear to be fitted with a TRS jack where the tip acts as a switch when a jack is inserted. Looking into the connector, there is a contact right at the opening which shorts TIP to ground once fully inserted.

We purchased all available stock, so we’ll work around it, but wanted to flag whether this is a batch issue or an eBOM problem. We have photos of the jack showing the TIP contact visible at the opening if helpful.

Soldered Support:

After reviewing the breakout board, our engineering team has confirmed that the PCB silkscreen labeling is incorrect on hardware versions v1.0.0 and v1.1.0.

This is a labeling/documentation issue only. We will correct the documentation for these versions and the error will be fixed in the next hardware revision.

For versions v1.0.0 and v1.1.0, please use the following actual pin mapping:

  • The pin labeled TIP is actually SLEEVE
  • The pin labeled RING2 is actually TIP
  • The pin labeled RING1 is correctly labeled
  • The pin labeled SLEEVE is actually RING2

We will update the documentation to clearly highlight this, and future revisions of the board will have the correct markings on the PCB itself.
