ESP8266 module connection to Dasduino CORE

Customer:

I need help connecting an ESP8266 module with a Dasduino CORE. I’ve created a custom PCB for easier wiring. I want to know if the module needs to be flashed or if it’s plug and play. I’ve added the ESP8266 library to Arduino IDE alongside the Dasduino library and copied both JSON files into preferences. Is there anything else I need to do, or should this work as is?

Soldered Support:

The module definitely needs a logic level converter because the ESP8266 operates at 3.3V logic level while the Dasduino CORE operates at 5V.

Here’s how to connect Dasduino CORE and ESP8266:

Wiring:

  • Dasduino GND to ESP8266 GND
  • Dasduino 3.3V to ESP8266 VCC
  • Dasduino RX (e.g., D2) to ESP8266 TX (through level shifter)
  • Dasduino TX (e.g., D3) to ESP8266 RX (through level shifter)

Warning: ESP8266 uses 3.3V logic – connecting 5V TX from Dasduino directly can damage it. Use a logic level shifter: Logic Level Converter Board – Soldered Electronics

Software – Arduino code

In Arduino IDE, add SoftwareSerial:

#include <SoftwareSerial.h>

SoftwareSerial espSerial(2, 3); // RX, TX pins, for example 2 and 3, you can use any others

void setup() {
  Serial.begin(9600);
  espSerial.begin(9600);
  Serial.println("Starting communication with ESP8266...");
  espSerial.println("AT"); // test communication
}

void loop() {
  if (espSerial.available()) {
    Serial.write(espSerial.read());
  }
  if (Serial.available()) {
    espSerial.write(Serial.read());
  }
}

Open Serial Monitor (9600 baud), set “Both NL & CR” and test with AT. If it returns OK, the connection with ESP8266 is established.

Connecting to WiFi network

After AT, enter the following commands:

AT+CWMODE=1
AT+CWJAP="wifi_network_name","password"

If successful, it returns WIFI CONNECTED.

Sending HTTP request (GET example):

AT+CIPSTART="TCP","example.com",80
AT+CIPSEND=47
GET / HTTP/1.1
Host: example.com

Tips: If ESP doesn’t respond, check power supply and logic levels. A 1000 µF capacitor near ESP power supply is recommended to smooth out power supply irregularities. This is a basic tutorial – let me know if ESP8266 responds to the “AT” command. If not, try 115200 baud rate. If it still doesn’t respond, the AT-commands sketch may need to be flashed to the ESP8266, which I can help with if we determine that’s the issue.

sad razumijem, modul svakako treba logic level converter jer esp 8266 radi na 3v3 logic levelu dok Dasduino CORE radi na 5V.

Evo tutoriala za spajanje Dasduino CORE-a i esp8266 modula:

Naravno! Evo kratkog, direktnog i konstruktivnog tutoriala za korištenje ESP8266 WiFi modula s Dasduino CORE (ATmega328P):

:gear: Povezivanje Dasduino COREESP8266GNDGND3.3VVCCRX (npr. D2)TX (preko level shiftera!)TX (npr.

void setup() {
Serial.begin(9600);
espSerial.begin(9600);
Serial.println(“Početak komunikacije s ESP8266…”);

espSerial.println(“AT”); // testiraj komunikaciju
}

void loop() {
if (espSerial.available()) {
Serial.write(espSerial.read());
}
if (Serial.available()) {
espSerial.write(Serial.read());
}
}

Otvori Serial Monitor (9600 baud), postavi “Both NL & CR” i testiraj s AT. Ako vrati OK, veza s ESP8266 je uspostavljena.

:globe_with_meridians: Spajanje na WiFi mrežu Nakon AT, upiši sljedeće naredbe:

AT+CWMODE=1
AT+CWJAP=“ime_wifi_mreže”,“lozinka”

Ako sve prođe dobro, vraća WIFI CONNECTED.

:outbox_tray: Slanje HTTP zahtjeva (primjer GET):

AT+CIPSTART=“TCP”,“example.com”,80
AT+CIPSEND=47
GET / HTTP/1.1

Customer:

I’ve stepped down the voltage to 3.3V for the ESP8266 using a step-down converter. I’ll test tomorrow and report back.

Original message (Croatian)

Uredu, ja sam preko step down- spustio napon na 3.3 V za esp8266. Probam sutra pa se javim.

Soldered Support:

A step-down converter can work for power, but the serial communication lines (RX and TX pins) must also go through a logic level converter – just to clarify so you don’t connect the TX pin to the ESP8266 RX and damage it, since it can only tolerate 3.3V maximum.

Original message (Croatian)
