Inkplate 10 power button default to on instead of off

Customer:

I’m looking for help with the Inkplate 10 forum. My program running on the board seems to get stuck somewhere in its deep sleep cycle loop. I’d like to work around the issue by turning power on and off every day on a timer to force it to start again. The problem is that when power is restored, the board defaults to power off mode until the power button is pressed. Is there a way to disable the power button on the Inkplate 10 or make it default to “on” instead?

Soldered Support:

If your program gets stuck and won’t wake up from deep sleep, it could be due to a deep sleep timer not getting set correctly or Inkplate running out of power if you’re running it on battery.

To clarify: the behavior of the power button is hardware-related and it can’t be changed through software. However, you could try a software restart once per day using esp_restart();

I’d recommend trying the software reset as a first-hand solution and then figuring out what’s causing your program to not wake up from sleep - that seems like a more sustainable long-term solution.

My hope was to put the board into a mode where when power first comes on, the board powers up automatically. Currently, when power comes on the board stays in “off” mode until the power button is pressed. If the board could do this, I would plug in the board via USB cable and then every day unplug the cable and plug it back in to reset my program. I’ll need to figure out why my program seems to get stuck in deep sleep instead.

I’ve consulted with our hardware designers and the functionality you describe where the switch is defaulted to ‘on’ could potentially be done via hardware modification. Here is what would need to be done: the power switch would need to be shorted for a short moment for Inkplate to start. You could do this with a capacitor, but you would also have to figure out a way to discharge it. This remains untested, so proceed at your own risk.

However, I’d recommend trying the software reset as a first-hand solution and then figuring out what’s causing your program to not wake up from sleep - that seems like a more sustainable long-term solution. If you can share details about the software side of this issue, I can help troubleshoot further.
