Inkplate 10 power supply not detected error with ESPHome

Customer:

I’m using an Inkplate 10 running ESPHome. Everything worked perfectly until I suddenly got this error: [inkplate:265]: Power supply not detected. Flashing the official examples via Arduino IDE also doesn’t wake up the screen anymore. What could be causing this?

What version of the Inkplate 10 do you have? Which GPIO expander does your Inkplate have? There are 2 versions of Inkplates with differences in GPIO expanders, so if you choose the wrong board definition, the code will upload successfully but the screen won’t update. Are you using the newest Inkplate library and board definition? Which example did you try?

Customer:

My board uses the MCP23017. The panel did work with ESPHome until now. I actually have two of the same batches of panels - the other one is still working fine. I do remember having this issue before and seeing this error message, but back then it randomly started working again after flashing some code onto the ESP which didn’t do anything eink related. I’m wondering if this is a hardware fault and if there’s anything I can do to fix it with very limited SMD solder abilities, or if it’s basically unusable. I added the library and board definitions to my Arduino IDE yesterday so it should be the newest version. I tried Inkplate10_Grayscale and the screen remained black like it got stuck when it stopped working.

Soldered Support:

In Arduino under Tools > Board, select e-radionica Inkplate10, not the Soldered one, and the screen should work.

I removed and reseated the ribbon cable which didn’t change anything.

Can you please run some i2c tests to see if the TPS is alive? You should see 3 addresses: 2 of the GPIO expanders and one of TPS PMIC. 0x20 and 0x22 are the addresses of GPIO expanders, so the third is for TPS. If you don’t see one of these addresses, something went wrong.
