Inkplate 4 TEMPERA display sourcing and quality

Customer:

I’ve been looking at the Inkplate 4 TEMPERA documentation on your website and Crowdsupply. I appreciate the device design, documentation, code examples, and that it’s open source and made in EU.

My concern is about the recycled display. You state that “The screens used in Inkplate 4 TEMPERA are sourced from old, non-functional e-paper devices. Sometimes it’s an e-book reader and sometimes it’s a store shelf digital label. These screens are carefully removed, cleaned, and retested to ensure they meet our quality standards”. I appreciate the sustainability approach, but I’m wondering how many hours these were used and under what conditions - for example, exposure to UV light and harsh environments. The flexible PCB of the display also has passive components on it - I’m curious about their usage history and environmental conditions as well.

You also mention that “screens were originally made by the E Ink Corporation for a now-discontinued product”. Were they perhaps never used?

Could you provide more information on these points?

Soldered Support:

The panels for Inkplate 4 TEMPERA models sold on our webshop are confirmed to be new - the first batch sold on Crowdsupply used recycled panels. Either way, the panels go through testing and we have strict guidelines to test them with different pictures to ensure image quality looks good. If you order from our webshop, you will get a brand new and tested panel on your Inkplate 4 TEMPERA.

When choosing between models, keep in mind that the glass panel version’s touch is more precise and responsive than the version without.

Customer:

Do Digikey and Mouser also have the Tempera with the new screen?

Soldered Support:

You will be receiving a new panel from Digikey or Mouser.
