Inkplate 4 TEMPERA ESPHome support and configuration

Customer:

I’ve worked through the Arduino examples for Inkplate 4 TEMPERA and want to understand the status of community support for ESPHome. I see that Inkplate 5, 6, 10 and 6 Plus have information on the ESPHome website. Is there another source of information for Inkplate 4 TEMPERA?

Soldered Support:

Community support for ESPHome is officially published for certain Inkplate models at Inkplate 5, 6, 10 and 6 Plus - ESPHome - Smart Home Made Simple.

Technically, support for newer models exists since all that’s required is the ESPHome config file and the Inkplate Arduino library. In ESPHome there’s a config file for Inkplate5 (a recent user contribution) that you can use as a basis for Inkplate 4 TEMPERA, as it uses the same GPIO expander. You’ll need to make your own configuration file for Inkplate 4 TEMPERA.

This will give you basic control of the display. The additional sensors and input devices you would have to implement yourself.

ESPHome support for Inkplate was a user contribution. We’re currently learning more about it to make our own configuration files for all Inkplate models and write documentation so it’s available for all users.

Soldered Support:

I’ve found our attempts at porting ESPHome to newer Inkplate models by adding the GPIO expander (which differs between newer and older models) as an ESPHome component and linking everything in the config file. I got permission to share this with users running ESPHome on their Inkplate.

We’ve since found that the component actually exists and was written well before, but the config file and README from this internal repository would be helpful to see how to link everything correctly. You could use the PCAL6416A component from our repo (it works) but the existing one on ESPHome is written better.

We are going to be creating official ESPHome support for all devices soon.
