Inkplate 4 TEMPERA frontlight example not working

Customer:

I have questions about my Inkplate 4 TEMPERA. The gesture sensor example project does not work - where the sensor is shown in the presentation video there is just a plastic piece. The frontlight example also does not work; no light appears regardless of intensity settings. How can I get the frontlight and gesture sensors working? I’m new to board programming and would appreciate help.

Soldered Support:

First, verify you have the latest version of the Inkplate library and board definition by installing from /dev. Instructions for installing custom Arduino libraries are available at https://pastebin.com/raw/rin2FXdk

For the gesture sensor: the sensor hole is located on the side of the device. Upload the gesture sensor example unmodified - the screen should display what you’re doing depending on whether you swipe up, down, left, or right. Use a full palm in front of the sensor and experiment with the distance and swipe speed, as you might be swiping too fast or too slow. If it doesn’t work, try the example without the enclosure.

For the frontlight: try the frontlight example again after reinstalling the library. If it still doesn’t work, it could be a connector issue. The e-Paper data and frontlight power share one connector, so if one part works, the other likely will too.

I’ve downloaded the dev library and tried the examples but still get the same results. The front light still doesn’t work. For gestures, I removed the board from the casing and the sensor worked, and it continued working after putting the board back into the casing.

Customer:

The gestures are difficult to use with the case on, but it proves the sensor works. What more tests can I do for the front light?

Soldered Support:

The gesture sensor definitely works, but the 3D printed enclosure is blocking it. Check if there is any 3D print residue in front of the sensor which could be blocking it - even a very small item like a small string of plastic left over from 3D printing could cause problems.

Regarding the frontlight, a disconnected frontlight connector could be the cause. Try reconnecting it - it’s on the secondary board of Inkplate 4 TEMPERA. Gently pull out the latches, remove the connector carefully as it’s sensitive to creasing, then re-insert it and secure the latches back firmly in place.

I found residue and cleared it - the sensor now works much better. For the front light, I reconnected the connector at the specified location but the example still does not work.

Soldered Support:

The frontlight should be working and it’s likely a connector issue. Try reconnecting the large white flat cable connecting the secondary board to the main board (visible in the previous picture - it’s the large flat white cable with blue markings). It works on the same latch principle as the other connector. This is more delicate, but reconnecting it could resolve the issue, as this is very likely a connection problem.
