The device powers on, but it is not recognized by Windows when plugged in, even after installing the CH340 driver. I get “Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)”. After searching online, I found suggestions that the CH340 might be a counterfeit part bricked by official FTDI firmware. I cannot communicate with the board.

Soldered Support:
Our devices are tested and flashed with firmware via USB on a Windows machine as the final step of production. Try a different USB-C cable, as we have experienced issues with the USB cables sent with Inkplate. If possible, try a different machine or connect to a phone via a USB C-C cable and use a serial terminal to send peripheral mode commands for testing. With CH340 drivers installed, things work fine with our devices (Inkplate and Dasduino both use the same serial circuit).

It was the USB-C cable. With a new cable, the device is recognized and I can communicate with it.
