Inkplate 6 example crashing on display access

Customer:

I got my hands on Inkplate 6 and tried to get started with one of your examples. But it keeps crashing/dumping. After adding some logs, it appears the dump occurs as soon as it actively accesses the display, like display.display() or display.print(“Welcome to Inkplate 6!”);

Try running Inkplate6_Black_And_White.ino unmodified. Check that you’re using the correct board definition in the Tools menu in Arduino. We recommend Arduino 2.0 and newer.

The partition scheme may be different from default. For board definitions, refer to: Inkplate Arduino — Inkplate docs documentation

Try the following steps:

  • Try a different USB cable and/or USB port
  • Try a totally empty sketch with nothing
  • Do you have the latest version of the library and board definitions? Sometimes doing a hard reinstall of this can fix these issues.

Regarding line strength/darkness, this is due to the waveform. The micropython library affects the e-Paper differently or has a different VCOM value. VCOM is a negative voltage used to calibrate the darkness of the e-Paper panel.

You can try calibrating the VCOM in Arduino mode yourself. Try values between -1.5 to -2.5 and see what looks best. Here’s a modified Factory_programming_VCOM example for Inkplate 6 that sets the VCOM: https://pastebin.com/raw/0CYjiKkB

Inkplate 6’s resolution is 800x600. Could you draw a simple fillRect at 0, 0, 800 wide 600 tall in BLACK and take a picture of the display?

Soldered Support:

Check the sticker on the flat cable - some e-Paper panels have the VCOM written there (something like -1.56 or -2.43). If not, try the range -1.5 to -2.5 and see what looks best for you.
