Inkplate 6 sunlight visibility and parking terminal application

Customer:

I’m interested in the Inkplate 6 e-paper display. I’ve previously built similar products sourcing displays from China and creating my own interfaces, but your product appeals to me and would integrate well into my project.

I’m somewhat familiar with e-paper, but I need an honest answer: how does it perform in sunlight? The intended use is in a parking terminal, and I’m concerned about temperature sensitivity. So far I’ve solved this through mechanical design, but I’d prefer to simply install the display and have it work. I also need to ensure product standardization - if I design a terminal with specific dimensions, I need to know the product will remain available in those dimensions for at least 12 months.

Regarding communication: I see you offer multiple options. I’m interested in I2C, SPI, and primarily serial (I see the baud rate is defined as 115200). Are all three options immediately usable without additional modifications? I have my own LAN communicator that distributes communication tasks, and I have free SPI, I2C, and serial channels available. I’m uncertain which to use for the display (serial is prepared, but I might use something else).

The basic functionality makes sense to me - images are called from SD card, which is fine. However, I need clarification on one specific capability that’s important for my application. I’ve easily solved this on my own interface, but I’m wondering how it would work with your display.

I need to send parking fee amounts or notifications as text through communication, and they need to be large and legible. Specifically, how is it implemented so that when I send text, the display knows how to display it according to my requirements and where on the display to position it?

Can you provide a quote for one unit so I can test it?

E-paper displays do not perform well in direct sunlight - the image becomes faded under those conditions. This depends on environmental factors, but constant sun exposure is not recommended.

Regarding dimensions, I can say with reasonable confidence that the Inkplate design and dimensions will remain identical for some time to come, though of course no one can guarantee this with 100% certainty.

For communication, you can control it via UART (serial) using its peripheral mode: Inkplate Peripheral Mode — Inkplate docs documentation

The other option is to program it directly, after which you can configure it to work over whatever you prefer, including SPI and I2C. I recommend reviewing the link above for Peripheral mode (also called Slave mode) where everything is documented. This is likely the simplest approach for your needs.

If you have any further questions, we’re available.
