TCRT5000 for distinguishing plastic and paper by reflectivity

Customer:

I’m working on a project with a conveyor belt and servo motors that activate individually depending on the material type. I’m planning to use the TCRT5000 obstacle sensor. I’d like your opinion on this approach: if I made plastic and paper cubes and painted them the same color on the outside, but painted the plastic cube on the inside instead, would the sensor readings be different?

Also, if I place the sensor in a black box lit by a weak white LED, would the readings be more accurate?

Zanima me vaše mišljenje.

Soldered Support:

The TCRT5000 measures how much infrared light is reflected from an object, so the environment has a significant impact on its readings, especially if the light must pass through another material. The readings on the analog output (A0) would likely be different between the scenarios you described. Because of this, your code should set different detection thresholds. In all cases, the sensor should work well and as expected—you just need to experimentally determine the values it sends on A0 with and without an object present.

You can run this experiment by reading the values on pin A0 via serial communication and printing them to the Serial Monitor. Measure the values when an object is present and when it’s absent. This way you can easily find the analog threshold value to compare against to detect whether an object is present or not.
