Croduino NOVA IO pins and 5V sensor interfacing for smart vehicle project

Customer:

I’ve programmed boards before, but I’m concerned about IO pin count - NOVA has 9 vs 22 on BASIC2. My son is interested in electronics, and I’d like to build a smart vehicle project using your tutorials. We plan to use an ultrasonic sensor for obstacle detection, a servo motor for steering, motors for propulsion, possibly an accelerometer to measure acceleration, and an SD card to log events. Can I connect all these devices to NOVA? For the ultrasonic sensor, would I need to add a logic level converter since it operates at 5V?

NOVA has a 5V pin powered by the CP2102 bridge that you can use to power modules requiring 5V. Of the sensors you mentioned, the only one sending a signal back to NOVA is the ultrasonic module - it returns a +5V signal, so it’s a good idea to connect the module’s ECHO pin through a 1kΩ resistor.

You can expand IO pins using shift registers, which are a standard part of our sets: https://e-radionica.com/hr/blog/2015/08/19/shift-registri/
