I was pleased to discover that Croatia has a contender in the Arduino world. We will certainly find applications for Croduino in our laboratory projects, and I’m eager to start exploring it. I’m personally involved in music, and I’m very interested in Croduino’s capabilities for MIDI communication. My question is whether it’s possible to achieve MIDI communication over USB with Croduino (I’m confident classic MIDI will work), for example by loading libraries such as https://www.arduino.cc/en/Reference/MIDIUSB or something similar?

You can use that specific library with Croduino, as well as most others, since Croduino Basic is powered by Atmega328. For reference on how MIDI libraries are used, see these projects from colleagues: project:synthomir [Radiona Wiki] and https://www.facebook.com/velvetfestival/

Thank you for the quick response! I was confused by the controller name—I see Atmega328 listed for Croduino, but all the specifications mention Atmega32u4. I’ll be in touch once I’ve assembled everything.

Tiho, Hvala puno na brzom odgovoru! Bunio me naziv kontrolera (kod vas Atmega328 a u svim specifikacijama Atmega 32u4) Kad složim stvar javljam se hehe [name removed], dipl.ing.el. The difference is that the 32u4 has a built-in USB transceiver. On Croduino Basic(1), we use an FTDI chip for that function, and on Croduino Basic(2) we use a CP2102 USB to UART bridge.

I’m back with another question. I’ve worked through the USB MIDI issue, but after further research I see that my device would need to control Croduino over USB, which means Croduino would need to be a USB Host, not a Device. Do you offer a USB host module in your product line, or is there a software trick to convert Croduino to Host mode?
Original message (Croatian)
Yes, exactly—you need a Host! We previously offered an Arduino USB host shield, but unfortunately we no longer stock it: Soldered: Open-Source Electronics, Boards, Sensors & Modules – Soldered Electronics Unfortunately, with the hardware on Basic/Basic2 you cannot have USB host. You would need a microcontroller that implements USB internally to have that capability, such as Arduino Due: https://www.arduino.cc/en/Reference/USBHost

Soldered: Open-Source Electronics, Boards, Sensors & Modules – Soldered Electronics
Arduino Due: https://www.arduino.cc/en/Reference/USBHost
