Desoldering pump 108330 maintenance and solder buildup prevention

Customer:

I just purchased the 108330 desoldering pump and would like tips on maintenance and how to make it last as long as possible. I’ve had bad luck with desoldering pumps breaking quickly in the past.

I use them primarily for vacuum tube amplifiers. The issue I always encounter is that solder forms a layer on the inside of the conical tip that the metal rod eventually can’t clear out. Even after opening and cleaning as best I can, the strain breaks something or wears it out before too long. Often the metal rod ends up popping out of the plunger, and after a few replacements, won’t stay in place anymore.

I’ve considered using some sort of grease on the inside to help the solder not stick to the sides of the tip. Is this a good idea, and is there any particular grease you’d recommend? Are there any regular cleaning or maintenance habits you’d recommend performing at certain intervals?

Soldered Support:

The 108330 desoldering pump should work fine for your desoldering needs. As long as you empty the barrel of solder, you should be good to go—we recommend doing this once every 10 uses or so.

Using grease to help prevent solder from sticking could be a great idea to extend its lifespan. We haven’t tried it ourselves, but there’s no reason it should negatively impact the usage and it could only be an improvement.
