EPub-InkPlate Release 0.9.2

Customer:

I’ve published version 0.9.2 of EPub-InkPlate on the forum. There are still some issues to work on but it may be ready for someone to try.

I need some help to understand the behavior I’m getting from the low-level screen update I ported to the ESP-IDF: I’m not able to get the same speed of screen refreshing as the Arduino version. It’s about twice as long! The refresh seems to be done properly, but at a slower speed. This is very problematic for an application that requires good user interaction. I suspect the I2C interface is not as fast as required. A logic analyser would be needed to look at the traces and compare with the Arduino base screen refresh.

I don’t have the equipment to look at the I2C bus and have no documentation on the specifics of screen refresh, so I’m puzzled to find a solution. Any advice?

That’s a huge effort. I honestly hope this was worth it for you. The result is awesome.

[name removed] is ready to help you. He’s written the low-level part for Inkplate that drives the screen, so he will know the exact answer to your questions.

I finally found the problem. It was related to a potential problem in the Arduino code: a delay not long enough after applying the WAKEUP signal to the e-paper power management chip. I mentioned it to [name removed] in my last email to him. I found it by myself—just explaining my issue to [name removed] helped me think about ways to find it!

Now I get screen refresh as fast as the Arduino code. I’ve modified the ESP-IDF drivers accordingly in the specific package I built on GitHub: GitHub - turgu1/InkPlate6-ESP-IDF-Drivers: InkPlate-6 ESP-IDF SDK LowLevel Drivers (C++) · GitHub

I was always fascinated by the fact that you can notice something you weren’t able to before, just by explaining it to someone. Glad it helped you in this case too! I’m sure [name removed] will take a proper look at it and fix it at all places where it occurs. Thanks for the report.

That’s great—big thanks for the ESP-IDF driver. May I fork it into our official repository? I’ll give you write access to that repo when forked.
