Inkplate 10 Arduino hard reset and MicroPython image out of range errors

Customer:

I have two issues I can’t resolve. First, with Arduino IDE: I had to slow down the upload rate, but uploads eventually succeeded. However, uploading any code—including basic Serial.print tests or your examples—ends with this output:

Leaving…
Hard resetting via RTS pin…

There isn’t much information about this online. The Serial Monitor outputs rst:0x1 (POWERON_RESET),boot:0x12(s and then nothing else happens. What’s going on?

Second, I tried MicroPython. The documentation is difficult to work through. After significant testing and digging, I was able to connect with picocom and push shapes to the display. Your demo images worked fine, but I’m getting an “out of range” or “IndexError: bytes index out of range” error when attempting to load an image. I’m using a black and white bitmap, cropped smaller than the pixel dimensions of the screen. What’s causing this?

Soldered Support:

For the Arduino IDE, that output is correct after a successful upload. POWERON_RESET is the first thing the ESP32 sends over Serial when it turns on. If you’re trying to upload the basic examples, they likely have no other prints to Serial. The reason your screen isn’t updating is probably because you’re using the wrong board definition. Try both the ‘e-Radionica’ and ‘Soldered’ variants—these two board definitions communicate with the ePaper differently, which is why the screen won’t update. This should resolve the issue.

For MicroPython, a dev branch version is available with better-documented examples and improvements to the main branch. MicroPython support was originally contributed by a user and has since been built upon, so documentation improvements are planned.

To help with the image issue: are you trying to display the image in 2-bit (grayscale) or 1-bit mode? I can provide more details on correct conversion once I know.
