Inkplate 2 display update flickering sequence during printText and display calls

Customer:

When displaying things in MicroPython—for instance, calling display.printText and then calling display.display()—the screen update/flickering sequence takes quite some time. It first flickers slowly and then fast multiple times. Will this flickering sequence happen every time the display needs any visual update? I was expecting a few flickers, but it feels like there are >10 flickers. Also, would there be a way to get less flickering on a display update when using Arduino/C instead of MicroPython?

The screen update procedure you described is normal. Inkplate 2 takes a while to update, as it is an entry-level display. If you want to make the display refresh faster, use only black pixels—this way the sequence to paint the red pixels won’t be activated, saving time. The actual update process should be completely the same on MicroPython and Arduino, but MicroPython has a bit more overhead and is a bit slower when processing the image frame data, though on a small display like Inkplate 2 this shouldn’t make that much of a difference. Arduino is recommended since the library has been worked on more and has all the latest features and examples.
