Inkplate 5 Gen2 battery charging IC replacement after reversed polarity

Customer:

I recently received an Inkplate 5v2 and installed a Li-Ion battery, but inserted it with reversed polarity. The board produced a burning smell when plugged in. After swapping the leads, the board still runs on the battery but will not charge. No obvious damage is visible on the board components near the battery connector. What component needs to be replaced to restore charging functionality?

Soldered Support:

The battery charging IC is the MCP73831T. This would be the first component to try replacing. A detailed inspection of this part in the corner could reveal damage. If replacing it doesn’t restore charging, let me know and I can consult with the hardware team for further guidance.

I will try replacing the charging IC. I believe I also burned out the charging LED. What is the part number for that LED so I can order it?

Soldered Support:

It’s a standard SMD LED, size 0402, so look up “0402LED” and it should fit. Note that the anode/cathode orientation is opposite to the schematic.
