How does the Sharp GP2Y0A21YK0F analog distance sensor work? Does it measure distance at a single point or does it operate over a field of detection around itself?

The sensor works on the principle of infrared light reflection. It emits infrared light and measures how strongly it returns, which affects the output voltage that can be used to measure distance. The sensor can measure distances between 10 to 80cm.
The sensor looks in one direction (straight along where the infrared light is emitted) and you can expect accurate readings in that straight line within the range of 10 to 80cm.

Senzor gleda u jednom smijeru (ravno odakle se odašilje infracrveno svijetlo) i možeš očekivati točna čitanja u tom ravnom pravcu u duljini 10 do 80cm.
I need a sensor that can detect both metal and non-metal objects. The sensor would be placed on an object that needs to move freely in space while avoiding obstacles. Do you have such a sensor in your web shop or can you recommend one?

Check the HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor – it’s frequently used for such applications and because of its simple operating principle it’s easy to implement in projects.
In fact, if you take the easyC version with some easyC cables, you can very easily connect several such sensors to your project:

Yes, it can. Some kits actually come with this sensor included, so it’s completely compatible. The easiest approach is to take an easyC cable and connect it to the easyC version of the sensor, from the link I sent in my previous message.
The Arduino library for that sensor is available here:
It includes examples for how to read data from the sensor and use it in your code.
