After consulting the schematic, it looks like the board is missing the 10k Ohm resistor between the Serial port’s TXD and GND that’s required for break signaling, per the datasheet (section 4.2.2). Without it, the chip can’t pull TXD low to generate a break condition, so unfortunately this variant can’t currently be used for that use case.
